Happy first birthday to my blog!! I can not believe I’ve been blogging for a whole year, where has the time gone? I want to start this off with a huge thank you to everyone who’s read my blog and supported me over the past 12 months, there is no way I would’ve been able to stay as motivated as I have in terms of blogging if it weren’t for all of you. I know super corny but its true, I’ve always been the type of girl who starts something new and then a week later moves onto something else, I need change to stay interested, but because of all of your constant love and support I’ve become so passionate about my blog and I know that this will only grow as I continue blogging well into the future. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I always spend weeks researching things before I actually jump into doing it but on the 15th of July last year I just opened up WordPress and made my blog. I had no idea what WordPress was like or how it worked, I just did it because I wanted to. Never would have I thought that on that afternoon I would be taking my first proper step into the wonderful world of blogging or that I would fall so in love with every part of blogging as much as I have.
I’ve had 2 other blogs in the past, one on Blogger way back when I was about 11 and one on wix. My blogger blog started and ended the same night. I created a blog, started to write a post and me being 11 I found a stock image of an eyeliner which I’d never heard of, let alone used, and wrote about two sentences before I gave up and went to bed. At the time I didn’t really know what blogging was, I didn’t know that people could be full-time bloggers or that I could design a beautiful blog on my own, so when it didn’t look good I assumed that that’s how it would always look and packed it up.
Over the years I started to get more into the blogging & vlogging world, I would spend all my time reading blogs and watching Youtube videos and I knew straight away it was something I wanted to do. I spent months researching and decided that I would make a blog although at the time I desperately wanted to start a YouTube channel, but I thought it would be a little easier to start off with a blog and see how it went, and as you can tell that blog also didn’t last. At the time I knew a girl at my school who had a blog on wix so I thought that would be perfect to make my own blog on. I wrote 2 posts and then never wrote another one. I’m going to be totally honest I didn’t like wix at all, it just didn’t fit right with me (unlike WordPress which is hands down my all time favourite blogging platform which I would recommend for all bloggers, I’ll be writing a big blogging advice post with more details on all of this v soon). My wix blog is still up on the internet, whether I like it or not since I have no clue what the password is. I thought I would include a little picture of what it looked like so you can see how different it is to my blog now.
At the time this was the best I could do, it looks fine and I’m pretty proud of it seeing as it was my first proper crack at blogging but it was far from what I wanted my blog to look like. Every now and then I get a comment from a lovely reader saying that they love how my blog looks which makes my day but trust me it did not happen over night and you can’t go into blogging expecting your blog to look exactly how you envisioned it straight away, it takes time, patience and a whole lot of learning to be able to create your blog and make it look exactly how you want it to.
Then exactly one year ago today I jumped straight into WordPress, I thought I’d jump straight into the deep end and use the platform that all my favourite bloggers used so I could hopefully make a blog that was somewhat like theirs and I’m very happy to say that this was the best rash decision of my life!! For the first 6ish months I was using WordPress.com which enables you to create a free blog and this was perfect for me to start out on as it was very easy to understand and great for me to learn the wordpress basics. This was the final look of my blog when it was on wordpress.com before I went self hosted.
After 6 months I found myself very tired, I was putting all this effort into my blog but it didn’t look at all how I wanted it to, and I wasnt proud of my blog so I decided to step it up and go self hosted. I didn’t even know what self hosting was, so after a lot of research I did it and I have never once looked back. If you’re thinking of going self hosted just do it, it may seem scary but after all the tricky tech stuff is done you’ll be able to actually create your blog as a whole rather than just putting your words and photos into a theme you can barely customise. However wait until you’re ready to make the switch, some bloggers wait a few years to go self hosted but me being as impatient as I am I went self hosted after a few months and it was the right decision for me.
Then on the 4th of february this year I told all my close friends about my blog, I’d already told a few and some found out before but I finally told everyone. The main thing that made me want to tell them was because my bog finally looked the way I’d always dreamed it would and I was so proud of it that even if they didn’t support it I wouldn’t care, but I had nothing to worry about, they were all so amazing and have been so supportive ever since I told them.
My blog has gone from being something I created so I had somewhere to put some photos and write a little bit about whatever I wanted into one of the best things in my life. Blogging has made me more comfortable in myself, it’s given me a creative outlet where I can write about things I’m passionate about and people from all around the world can connect with me, I’ve met so many amazing people through my blog and I can honestly say I’ve made some amazing friends that I never would’ve met if I didn’t start my blog. Thank you for a fab first year of blogging & I hope you stick around because I know that for many more years I’ll be blogging my little heart out.
Before I get into the Q&A part of this blog post I wanted to mention some bloggers who are the most beautiful girls and are some of my best friends:
~ Amelia (Rose Tinted Pics) Amelia is the loveliest girl and she has become my closest friend in the blogging world, she’s pretty much been here since the very beginning of my blog and has always been so supportive. She’s also one of my favourite bloggers, her blog is just stunning!!
~ Roxanne (The Happy Diary) Roxanne has been so amazing and supportive of my blog, she is such a lovely girl and I’m so lucky to have her as a friend, her blog is also so gorge.
~ Najida (Life As Najida) Najida is one of the nicest girls I’ve met through blogging, she is so genuine and supportive and her blog is again one of my faves.
~ Tilly (Life As Tilly Rose) Tilly’s another blogger I’ve known for pretty much the whole time I’ve had my blog, she herself has such an amazing blog and she has always been supportive of mine. She’s so lovely and I’m so lucky to have met her through my blog.
There are so many more people who I’m so lucky to have met through my blog and your constant love and supportive never goes unnoticed or unappreciated xx.
What’s your favourite blog post you’ve written so far? – @happy_roxanne & @xox._olivia._xox
This is really tricky because I’ve never put up a blog post that I’m not 100% happy with (trust me my drafts are full of posts that didn’t quite make the cut). I’ve always loved writing more chatty posts about life and things that people can hopefully relate to more than just a review or outfit post (however I do absolutely love writing beauty & fashion posts too). I honestly can’t pick a fave but I loved all my Blogmas posts from last year and my “Lets Chat… Love & All That Jazz Post“.
What Motivates you to blog? Where do you get your inspiration? Favourite makeup brand? Favourite series? – @girlyblogger.xx
Whenever I’m not feeling very motivated to blog I love to grab my camera and take some photos, when I get some good photos it makes me want to write so I can share the photos somewhere. I also love to read other bloggers that I love to get motivated to write more.
I get my inspiration everywhere, sometimes it’s from other bloggers, something happening in my life or something that I’ve experienced in the past, pinterest, instagram… the list goes on.
My makeup collection has a whole range of brands but some of my faves are Too Faced, Becca, Nars & Makeup Forever.
Ooo this is tough as I love so many shows but right now I’m loving Gilmore Girls and Love Island.
If there was one thing you would’ve done differently in terms of blogging what would it be? What is your dream for your blog? – @jessyteee_
Theres nothing I regret with blogging because if I hadn’t done what I did then I wouldn’t be here, but if there was one thing I would’ve done differently I would’ve posted more consistently in the beginning as it took me a while to get into the swing of blogging.
I don’t really have a set dream for my blog, I guess one day I’d love to be blogging more full-time and be able to reach more people. Once I finish high school I know that I will have the time to put more into my blog but in general I just want to keep blogging and hopefully more people will enjoy what I write.
What/who inspired you to make a blog? – @lifestyle.lizzy
My main inspiration for starting my blog were Zoella and Poppy Deyes, they’re both my fave bloggers and have always been a huge inspiration for me. I’ve also always loved photography and my blog has been a perfect space for me to get more creative when it comes to photography.
Did you ever think your blog would be this successful? Have you reached any of your blogging goals? What have you learnt throughout your journey? – @imagalaxygirlblog
This first question made me step back for a bit because I’d never really though of my blog being overly successful, I am so proud of my blog but I didn’t think it was that successful in the blogging world. I have accomplished a lot, maybe not in terms of numbers but my blog has grown into what it is today through hours and hours of hard work and I guess that is a success in itself. I never thought I could run my own blog and make it look how I’d always dreamed, so I guess no I never thought it would be this successful but I do still have a long way to go.
Yes I definitely have reached some of my blogging goals, as I’ve said a few times in this post I always wanted to make my blog look like how I’d always imagined and I finally took the plunge and went self hosted back in january which was a huge goal. I don’t really have number related goals as I try not to focus too much on all the numbers I just want to keep improving my blog.
I have learnt so much throughout my journey, I said most of it in the beginning of this post but a few key things are to not focus on the numbers, write what you’re truly passionate about because it will show if you love what you’re writing about, connect with other bloggers, I never would have made them amazing friends that I have if I didn’t talk to other bloggers.
Did you think you’d ever go self hosted? Do you like cats, dogs or both? – @lifeasnajida
When I first started my blog I had no clue what self hosting was, it wasn’t until around the beginning of december last year that I started to learn why self hosting was and I immediately knew it was what I wanted to do, then a month later I went self hosted and it was the best decision I made with my blog.
I’ve always loved dogs, I have nothing against cats but I do think I’ll always be more of a dog girl.
How did you grow your blog? What are your favourite posts to write? – @daydreamerciara
I wish I had some magic tip for how to grow your blog but honestly its all about consistency and connecting with your readers and other bloggers. If you only post once a month your blogs going to grow very slowly, I try now to post once a week and connect with people on Instagram and twitter. Also you can’t expect your blog to reach thousands of people straight away, it takes a lot of time and hard work, even if you don’t get heaps of readers straight away you can’t give up, over time people will find and love your blog, just give it time.
I love writing all different posts, my blogs a good mix of beauty, fashion and lifestyle and I love it because I get to write a whole range of posts and more people can find something they like. I do love a good chatty post though.
What keeps you blogging? @teaisfortina
There are so many things that keep me blogging, I love to write (as you can clearly see from how long this post is), taking photos and being able to share them but most importantly all of you reading, being able to chat with people who love the things I love is so fun and something I feel so grateful that I can do.
Once again thank you to everyone who’s read my blog and shows so much love and support, I can’t wait to get to know you all better and grow as friends as I keep blogging. Stick around because I’m going to be blogging for the next year and the next ten years after that.
