We’ve all heard people saying “do what makes you happy” but when it comes to what we wear it can be hard to wear what you want without worrying what other people are thinking. Over the past few years with the huge rise of social media, it’s so easy to be influenced to wear things that are “trendy” even if you don’t feel 100% comfortable wearing them. I know I’ve gone out and bought a crop top only to get home and stand in the mirror prodding and poking at my stomach, until eventually I rip it off and hide it in the back of draws never to be seen again.
What you wear shouldn’t make you feel self-conscious, it should make you feel like you can walk out of your house and take on the day, however this is easier said than done. Going shopping has for a lot of us become a chore, finding things that fit well, make you feel good about yourself and are considered trendy is harder than ever, especially when a lot of shops only cater for specific sizes and most of the clothes are skin-tight because that’s the “look” everyone’s going for. But what if wearing those style of clothes makes you feel like you’re trying to fit a mould that just isn’t you? Don’t wear them! Clothes are a way to express yourself (as corny as that sounds), if you want to go to lunch in killer heels and a dress then go for it or if sweatpants are more your thing then wear them. As long as you look in the mirror and feel happy then everyone else’s opinion doesn’t matter.
Another factor which can affect how we feel about what we wear, is our body confidence. Everyone, no matter who they are, has insecurities. You shouldn’t let that little voice in your head stop you from wearing those skinny jeans because “your hips are too big” or an off the shoulder top because “your shoulders are too wide”. My hips have been a big insecurity of mine for a while now and I tried to hide them under my mom jeans but the other night I wanted to wear my skinny jeans and guess what.. I did! And I felt amazing, I embraced what I had and wore what made me happy!! It will take time to over come your self-doubt but if you take small steps and try to wear different things that you’ve always been too scared to wear you’ll get there.
I wanted to write about this because I know that as a girl, its an everyday thing. Sometimes it feels like you’re all alone in a little bubble of self-doubt and insecurities, but believe me you’re not. All those bloggers you see styling their outfits to perfection all while causally leaning against a wall oozing confidence didn’t start out that way, they all went through their own issues when it comes to what they wear and they over came them. If you desperately want to wear a crop top but felt like people will judge you, just chuck it on and don’t look back, keep your head high and I guarantee people will look at you and be like “Damn that girl looks ahh-mazing!!”. When you’re getting dressed or going out shopping just remember wear what makes YOU happy.
